Motors below 25hp are
not sold in-season because the time to
repair them to a level I feel is satisfactory for reliable service, and the relatively low resale value
makes it prohibitive for me to continue offering them during the peak busy season (March-September). I
do stock parts and offer full repair
services for small motors throughout the year.
As of 5/21, I am no
longer
selling motors below 9.9hp dating prior to 1980. Pricing
listed below is for small, and older motors if available. There's
nothing wrong with buying a motor produced in the 1950's, 1960's, or
1970's so long as it is in good condition. Small motor orders are fulfilled in the off-season (October-February).
6-8hp
motors offer more power than their smaller counterparts and
can plane out small 12-14' aluminum boats, and are ideal for Jon/flat
bottom boats. They offer full gear shift and most include
thermostatically controlled cooling. Produced
1966-2006.
Here is a video I
captured from The History Channel's "Modern Marvels," featuring a 1967
6hp Evinrude Fisherman on a kit boat, moving right along at
20mph! Looks like a lot of fun.
9.5hp
motors have a religious following, keep running, & are extremely
popular. They are the first compact outboard offering robust
features with power in a small package, and the 2nd generation of this
motor class, revised from the older 10hp motors produced up to
1963. They were made
specifically for fishermen & have been dubbed "turtle motors,"
amongst other regional slang terms. Produced 1964-1973. back to top

Test running a 15hp
motor for a customer late winter, still ice/snow out on the
water. No motor cover because it was a remote setup that I
installed a tiller on just for load testing. Hit 22MPH with just
me in the boat, a 12.5 pitch prop, and a 1/2 tank of gas. Really
fast!
9.9/15
HP motors are very popular for all 8-16 foot aluminum, jon boat, and
mooring holders. They are the 3rd generation of 9.5/10hp
motors (originating in the 50's) and offer numerous upgrades. The
same base model was produced
from 1974-2006. back to top

Note: I have found that the
powerhead in these motors manufactured after 1993 were not as durable
as the original design made for 20 years between 1974-1993, therefore I
have discontinued selling them unless I have a nice original condition one.

Here's
a
video from a customer filmed on a GoPro camera. It was a small restored
wood boat and the motor pushed the boat along very quickly!
18-25hp
motors (prior to 1977) offer a bridge from trolling motors and
transport vessels to
water bodies with strong currents, winds, and larger vessels such as
14-18' boats and pontoons. They are also commonly used as kicker
motors for large, heavy boats. They are very popular amongst
small aluminum boaters who want speed but are concerned about
weight. A light aluminum boat can reach speeds as fast as
30-35mph (depending on load and configuration). Historically,
25hp motors have been used for mini-racers (1-man, stubby boats under
8' in length). They also offer the provision of electric start
and steering control.
The 18, 20, & 25hp motors were all based off the original 18hp
motor design of 1958. The 20 & 25hp models are enhanced
versions.back to top
